Using Essential Oils in your yoga practice

I love incorporating essential oils in my yoga practice and teachings. The oils work great on an emotional level and really enhance your experience in the practice. Especially in the more gentle yoga classes and yin & restorative yoga you will notice their benefits. They may bring up old memories, they assist in letting go, they give a feeling of belonging and connectedness.

In my recent workshop ‘Cultivate an open Heart’ at Holistic Nurture I used different oils to find more access to our heart space. We must lead our life from our heart with love.

As Jack Kornfield puts it in his book ‘A Path with Heart’

The longing for love and movement of love is underneath all of our activities. The happiness we discover in life is not about possessing or owning or even understanding. Instead, it is the discovery of this capacity to love, to have a loving, free, and wise relationship with all of life. Such love is not possessive, but arises out of a sense of our own well-being and connection with everything. Therefore, it is generous and wakeful, and it loves the freedom of all things. Out of love, our path can lead us to learn to use our gifts to heal and serve, to create peace around us, to honour the sacred in life, to bless whatever we encounter, and to wish all beings well.

Our yoga practise helps us to slow down and to become more aware our feelings. Especially in a yin yoga practice, where we hold poses passively for a longer time, we are in a way confronted with our emotions and can develop a better understanding in how to nourish and nurture our heart in a more loving and compassionate way.

Balance (Grounding Blend)

Wild Orange – the oil of Abundance
Wild Orange inspires abundance, creativity and supports a positive mood. It reconnects with the inner child, joyfulness and playfulness. It lets go of fear and the belief that there isn’t enough. Wild Orange brings you back to long warm and sunny summer days, the smell of sunshine.

On Guard – the Protective Blend
On Guard strengthens the Inner Self and maintains clear boundaries. Live in integrity with your True Self.

Geranium – the oil of Love & Trust
Geranium restores confidence in others and in the world, it encourages emotional honesty, love and forgiveness. Geranium heals the broken heart and assists in re-opening the heart so love may flow freely.

Ylang Ylang – the oil of the Inner Child
Ylang Ylang reconnects with the child self of the heart and assists in heart knowing. It releases any anger or sadness. Joy can be felt and experienced more fully by allowing the heart its full range of emotion.
